ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF ONTARIO
160th Annual General Meeting
Backyard Bugs: Community Science in Entomology
October 27-29, 2023
Message from the Organizers
This year we are excited to announce that our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be taking place at the Arboretum in Guelph, Ontario! The venue is surrounded by 400 acres of gorgeous gardens, walking trails, natural woodland and wetlands. This is a perfect spot to reflect on how important the pockets of nature in our backyard can be for research and community science. Throughout the pandemic, we saw an uptick in research scientists relying on help from community scientists across Canada as travel became more difficult. This experience illuminated how important it is to spark excitement for science in our communities and to understand the important role that anyone can play in science and conservation. We look forward to exploring these themes and connecting insect lovers across the province at this year's AGM! Registration will have the option for in person attendance as well as a hybrid option. For those in person, the cost will include a social on Friday night, lunch and dinner on Saturday and snacks throughout the weekend. We can’t wait to see you there! |
Plenary Speaker - Dr. Thomas Hossie
Thomas Hossie is an Assistant Professor in Biology at Trent University, broadly interested in population and behavioural ecology. His research broadly focuses on the ecology & evolution of predator-prey interactions, and conservation. He has a longstanding interest in insects, with a particular interest in dragonflies, butterflies, and moths. Since 2015 he has led community science and outreach programs in his community of Newcastle, ON, including monarch tagging events and moth nights, with the goal of showcasing the hidden biodiversity that surrounds us. These events seek to promote curiosity and provide personal connections to the natural world, which ultimately underpin successful efforts to conserve and restore wild spaces.

Engaging entomology – Making connections to hidden biodiversity
Abstract: Whether we notice them or not, insects surround us. In many ways, insects are the most accessible form of biodiversity that people can engage with. Indeed, much of their beauty, diversity, and fascinating biology remains hidden from people who don’t know when, where, or how to look for them. Through community outreach events, we can destigmatize these animals, showcase their hidden diversity and beauty, and secure prolonged engagement in conservation and community science initiatives. In my talk, I will explore some of the insect-related events and tools we have been using to reignite curiosity and promote engagement with community science. |
